Abstract

This study presents the design and development of a sustainable and cost-efficient moulding machine intended for producing biodegradable disposable plates from areca leaves. The primary objective is to provide an eco-friendly substitute for plastic and paper tableware while fostering rural entrepreneurship and environmental preservation. The machine functions through a manually operated hand-press mechanism, in which the die is electrically heated to achieve the required shape and surface finish. The incorporated heating system promotes proper bonding between the areca leaf layers, ensuring sufficient strength and a smooth surface on the moulded plates. Experimental trials verified that the machine operates efficiently, producing high-quality plates in a short cycle time and at a low operational cost. The simplified design ensures easy handling, maintenance, and suitability for small-scale or cottage industries. Overall, the proposed system demonstrates an effective and practical approach to sustainable manufacturing, waste valorization, and livelihood generation. Furthermore, it contributes to rural advancement and women's empowerment by promoting eco-conscious entrepreneurship at the community level.
