Abstract

Organisational culture is increasingly shaped by digital technologies, changing work arrangements, and new forms of leadership and collaboration. Traditional accounts often describe culture as a stable system of shared values and assumptions, whereas the digital era requires greater attention to adaptability, learning, trust, experimentation, inclusion, and technology-mediated interaction. This conceptual review synthesises foundational and recent literature on organisational culture in the context of digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), remote and hybrid work, digital leadership, collaboration, and employee adaptability. A structured conceptual-review methodology was used, combining searches of major scholarly databases and publisher platforms with backward and forward reference checking. Studies were screened for conceptual relevance, peer-review status, methodological clarity, and direct connection to organisational culture and digital-era work. The synthesis was organised thematically rather than by author chronology. The review shows that digital transformation does not simply require organisations to acquire new technologies; it changes the meanings, routines, relationships, and behavioural expectations through which culture is enacted. The literature also indicates that strong culture is not inherently beneficial: cultures that support trust, learning, psychological safety, experimentation, and responsible technology use are more compatible with digital adaptation than cultures characterised by excessive control and rigidity. The review identifies a fragmentation in existing research, with digital culture, digital leadership, hybrid work, AI adoption, and employee adaptability frequently examined as separate streams. To address this gap, the review proposes an integrated conceptual framework linking digital technologies, digital leadership, hybrid work, and digital collaboration to an adaptive digital organisational culture, which in turn supports employee adaptability, innovation and knowledge sharing, and sustainable organisational performance.
