Abstract

Pedestrian safety is a prime issue in the management of city traffic, especially in high footfall locations. Table top pedestrian crossings, with their raised platform structure, are more and more adopted to improve pedestrian safety through decreased vehicle speeds and increased visibility. This paper assesses the efficiency of table top crossings in Calicut, India, based on accident data gathered from various urban locations.

The research entails a comprehensive examination of patterns, severity, and contributing factors at chosen table top crossings. Geometric design, visibility, and user compliance were surveyed in the field to determine the accident rates at table top crossings and conventional crossings. A comparative study was also conducted of accident rates at table top crossings and conventional crossings. User perception surveys were also included to gauge pedestrian and driver behavior.

Findings suggest that table top crossings tend to slow down vehicles, resulting in a lower frequency and severity of accidents involving pedestrians. Despite this, the main limitations

cited were improper design, poor maintenance, and poor signage. The current study offers practical directives for the optimal design and installation of table top crossings, helping to create safer pedestrian spaces in urban environments. The findings are a guide for policymakers and urban planners who seek to improve pedestrian equipment in cities with comparable traffic conditions.
