MedConnect AI – Bridging Rural Healthcare Gap with AI and Telemedicine

Abstract

India faces a significant disparity in healthcare accessibility, particularly for its vast rural population. This divide is evident in the fact that while nearly 75% of qualified doctors practice in urban areas, only about 2% serve rural communities. The situation is further exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure rural regions have approximately 0.10 hospital beds per 1,000 people, compared to 2.2 beds per 1,000 in urban centres. To help bridge these systemic gaps, this paper presents MedConnect AI, an integrated and scalable digital health platform tailored for low-resource settings. The system incorporates several key features, including an AI-driven symptom assessment engine, low-bandwidth teleconsultation capabilities, integrated emergency service coordination, multilingual support, and a comprehensive health awareness portal. This study reviews the current landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and telemedicine in India, examines the technological architecture and comparative strengths of the MedConnect AI platform, and evaluates its potential to promote health equity by aligning with national initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
