Microstrip antennas are commonly utilized due to their slim profile, lightweight construction, and simplicity of production. An essential factor influencing their effectiveness is the choice of substrate material incorporated in the design. The substrate’s characteristics play a crucial role in determining key antenna metrics, including gain, bandwidth, efficiency, and radiation patterns. This review paper examines recent research on the effects of different dielectric materials on the performance of microstrip antennas. A comparison and discussion are conducted on frequently utilized substrates like FR4, Rogers laminates, RT Duroid, metamaterials, and nanocomposite-based materials. The objective is to assist researchers in selecting appropriate substrates for various contemporary applications such as wireless communication, satellite networks, and 5G systems.
