Customer-Level Differential Privacy in Federated Repeat Purchase Prediction with Unequal Retail Clients

Federated customer prediction requires a clear distinction between decentralised optimisation and a formal privacy mechanism. This study implements customer-level clipped gradient aggregation for repeat-purchase prediction using UCI Online Retail. A fixed 90-day history precedes 1 November 2011, and the outcome records purchases during the following 30 days. A deterministic customer split produces 1,457 training, 497 validation, and 507 test observations. Countries define 27 unequal simulated training clients, with the largest containing 1,316 customers. Each customer contributes one bounded feature vector and one clipped logistic gradient per round. Gaussian noise is added to the aggregate under a trusted coordinator, and a Rényi accountant reports replacement-adjacency privacy bounds for 100 full-participation rounds. Nonprivate federation achieves test ROC AUC of 0.6769 and average precision of 0.6366. At a per-model privacy bound of = 3.194 and = 0.00001, mean ROC AUC is 0.6812 and average precision is 0.6397 across five noise seeds. This small numerical increase is not evidence that privacy improves prediction. The results demonstrate a reproducible privacy-utility calculation for a limited retail cohort, without establishing distributed system scalability or protection against an untrusted aggregation server.
