Abstract

Intelligent image analysis has evolved through the integration of conventional image processing, machine learning, and deep learning. The increasing volume of visual data generated by cameras, medical scanners, satellites, smartphones, and industrial systems has created a growing need for automated methods that can extract meaningful information from images. This review examines the progression from traditional techniques, including image enhancement, filtering, edge detection, and feature extraction, to advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches. It discusses convolutional neural networks (CNNs), transfer learning, data augmentation, object detection, image segmentation, vision transformers, generative models, and hybrid approaches. Their applications in healthcare, agriculture, autonomous transportation, security, industrial inspection, and robotics are also reviewed. The effectiveness of these methods depends on the task, dataset, and evaluation metrics used. Quantitative measures such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Dice Similarity Coefficient, Intersection over Union, and mean average precision are important for assessing performance across relevant tasks. However, results from different studies should be interpreted carefully because their datasets and experimental protocols may differ. Key challenges include computational cost, data availability, robustness, privacy, and model interpretability. Emerging directions such as lightweight architectures, edge AI, explainable AI, multimodal learning, and real-time vision systems are also discussed. This review summarizes the capabilities, limitations, and future research opportunities in intelligent image analysis.
