In this project, the main objective is to design and develop a miniaturized wearable sweat sensor to diagnose cystic fibrosis (CF), an increasingly deadly genetic disease for newborns, with better accuracy and improved performance. The proposed sensor can accurately measure the concentration of sodium ion biomarkers present in the sweat and hence, can derive information on the status of CF in a prospective CF patient. The proposed device is housed in a smartwatch for wearability and can be powered up using the existing battery of the watch. The device will be plugged into cloud databases through IoT to ensure continuous monitoring. The device is tested in various design and implementation phases, which include breadboard implementation, PCB (printed circuit board) design, and housing in a smart watch. The simplicity of the design of the proposed sensor makes it both low-cost and energy-efficient. All these features, therefore, will enable the point-of-care diagnosis of cystic fibrosis even in the rural, unprivileged areas where a minimum medical facility is absent.
