Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized physical objects and their interactions; devices sense, communicate, and operate in interconnected systems. But the rapid growth has made it apparent what its structural weaknesses are. In centralized architectures there are issues such as single points of failure and lack of transparency as single points of failure or opacity. This increases the likelihood of trust issues and vulnerability to mass cyber-attacks. Blockchain, a decentralized, immutable, and distributed technology, secures its data against malicious attacks. A cryptographically verifiable distributed ledger has emerged as an attractive addition to IoT infrastructures. The paper also reviews the technical basis and convergence of blockchain and IoT. The benefits of the analysis of integration are focused on three aspects: improved security and data redundancy and consistency; decentralized trust; and autonomous machine-to-machine transactions enabled by smart contracts. The paper reviews important application areas of blockchain-IoT integration, including supply chain management, peer-to-peer applications, healthcare, and other IoT-based systems. The book includes case studies and a detailed appendix on energy trading, as well as industrial IoT, which is covered in less detail. The paper also compares centralized and blockchain-integrated architectures. The identified problems that are reducing the potential for large-scale adoption are studied thoroughly, including scalability limitations and device resources. In terms of limitations, these include storage overhead, energy usage, interoperability gaps, privacy issues, and regulatory uncertainty. Emerging solutions include lightweight consensus mechanisms and Directed Acyclic Graph-based approaches. These include ledgers, layer-2 scaling solutions, and zero-knowledge proofs as viable pathways forward. These results indicate that the combination of blockchain and IoT provides a viable path toward the more secure integration of smart, autonomous, and transparent IoT systems and solutions.
